Vintage 1940 US Navy 81' All Aluminum PT boat, "PT 8"

The US pt boat was one of the smallest and most maneuverable warships in the US Navy, WWII era. They were dubbed mosquito boats because they skinned quickly along the surface of the water , stung the enemies larger vessels and were most deadly in then dark. The size varied from 58' to 81'. The first boats were copied by the British. There was a 70' version built by ELCO Naval Division and a 78' model built by Higgins in New Orleans, LA All of these vessels were built of wood, plywood and mahogany planking covered with skins made of airplane fabric. The crew consisted of three officers and 12 to 15 crew members. There were approximately 800 of these vessels built. All but a handful are in existence today.
